Continuing Education Requirements

Utah Continuing Education Requirements for Mental Health Professionals

(R156-60e-402.1)

Utah requires licensed mental health professionals to complete ongoing professional development (continuing education) during each two-year license renewal cycle.

Utah CEU Requirements (Simplified):

  • 40 hours every 2 years (master’s level)

  • 6 hours ethics/law/tech

  • 2 hours suicide prevention

  • Up to 10 hours can be self-paced

  • Leadership, supervision, and consultation can count (with limits)

  • Keep documentation for 2 years

  • Audits can happen

If you’re a clinical supervisor: +6 supervision CEUs required

Here's a more thorough explanation of continuing education requirements:

The number of required hours depends on your degree:

  • Master’s degree or higher: 40 hours

  • Bachelor’s degree: 20 hours

  • Associate’s degree: 10 hours

All licensees must complete:

  • 6 hours in ethics, law, or ethics of technology

  • 2 hours in suicide prevention

If you complete more than the required hours, you may carry over:

  • Up to 10 hours (master’s level)

  • Up to 5 hours (bachelor’s or associate level)

CE hours must be relevant to your scope of practice and completed through approved providers, such as:

  • Accredited colleges or universities

  • Government agencies

  • Professional associations (like NASW or USSWA)

  • Mental health organizations

You can earn CEUs through a variety of activities, including:

  • Conferences, trainings, and seminars

  • Live (real-time) virtual courses

  • Asynchronous (self-paced) courses (up to 10 hours)

  • Teaching or presenting (limited)

  • Clinical reading (up to 10 hours)

  • Providing clinical supervision (up to 10 hours)

  • Serving on boards or in leadership roles (up to 6 hours)

  • Volunteer mental health services (up to 10 hours)

  • Peer consultation or observation (up to 10 hours)

You must keep records of your CEUs for at least two years after your renewal cycle.

Acceptable documentation includes:

  • Certificates of completion (with required details), or

  • Letters verifying participation (for activities like supervision or board service)

If you are a Division-approved clinical supervisor, you must complete:

  • 6 additional CE hours specifically related to supervision

The Division may randomly audit licensees during each renewal cycle. Be sure your documentation is complete and accessible.

Additional Notes:

  • CE requirements may be adjusted if you are newly licensed during a cycle

  • Only CEUs earned after your license is issued can be counted

  • In some cases, requirements may be deferred or waived

To stay compliant:

  • Meet your total hour requirement

  • Complete required ethics and suicide prevention hours

  • Stay within category limits

  • Keep documentation organized
