

Clinical Supervision Requirements
Effective 3/4/2026
Under Utah rule R156-60e-305.1, a clinical supervisor for a master’s level mental health license holder must:

Hold an active license in good standing as an LCSW, CMHC, MFT, psychologist, psychiatrist, APRN specializing in mental health therapy, or MAC.

Hold a master’s degree or higher.

Have been licensed for at least two years before providing supervision.

Be actively engaged in the lawful practice of clinical mental health therapy.
Before supervision hours can begin, the supervisor and supervisee must also:

Enter into a written supervision contract, and

Submit the clinical supervisor association form to DOPL identifying the supervisor, supervisee, and place of employment.
Once that form is submitted and the supervision relationship is established, hours can begin accruing.
*NOTE: If your CSW license was issued before May 1, 2024, you must complete the following hours:

3,000 total hours, including 1,000 hours of Direct Client Care, and 75 hours of Direct Clinical Supervision.
*NOTE: If your CSW license was issued as of May 1, 2024, you must complete the following hours:

3,000 total hours, including 1,200 hours of Direct Client Care, and 100 hours of Direct Clinical Supervision (25 of which must include Direct Observation).
