Clinical Supervision Requirements

Effective 3/4/2026

Under Utah rule R156-60e-305.1, a clinical supervisor for a master’s level mental health license holder must:

  • Hold an active license in good standing as an LCSW, CMHC, MFT, psychologist, psychiatrist, APRN specializing in mental health therapy, or MAC.

  • Hold a master’s degree or higher.

  • Have been licensed for at least two years before providing supervision.

  • Be actively engaged in the lawful practice of clinical mental health therapy.

Before supervision hours can begin, the supervisor and supervisee must also:

 

Once that form is submitted and the supervision relationship is established, hours can begin accruing.

*NOTE: If your CSW license was issued before May 1, 2024, you must complete the following hours:

  • 3,000 total hours, including 1,000 hours of Direct Client Care, and 75 hours of Direct Clinical Supervision.
     

*NOTE: If your CSW license was issued as of May 1, 2024, you must complete the following hours:

  • 3,000 total hours, including 1,200 hours of Direct Client Care, and 100 hours of Direct Clinical Supervision (25 of which must include Direct Observation).
